Traits of a good Leader – leadership defined

Leadership is one of those indescribable terms, it has various definitions. The traits of a good leader can vary depending on the organization, team, manager and work environment.

Leadership can also vary in style. Every leader has a particular inborn style of leadership. The behaviors and attitudes that are effective for one staff member, may in fact be counterproductive for another.

Good leaders are aware of their own style and make the effort to know how their style comes across to their team. They learn to adapt their leadership style to individuals and behave in ways that motivate and inspire.

Traits of a good leader as perceived by leadership professionals

1. Honesty. Employees will know where they stand with an honest leader at all times.

2. Focus. Know where you’re going and state your mission clearly. Have a strong focus and stay the course.

3. Passion. You must have passion for what you’re doing. Live, breathe, eat and sleep your mission.

4. Respect. Have no favorites and treat all people, no matter what class or rank, the same.

5. Superb persuasion abilities. People have to be persuaded to believe in you and your credibility. Image is everything and the belief people have in you, your mission and your reputation are key traits of a good leader.

6.Confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. People want to know what you know for sure and what not. Saying “I don’t know” is a powerful skill.

7. Clarity. Be really, really clear about who you are and what is most important to you. You can’t be all things to all people. Clarity helps you say “yes” to the right things and “no” to others.

8. Care. Not just about the business, but about the people in it and the people affected by it. Show care through words and actions.

9. Integrity. Good leaders are respected and worth listening to.

10. Engagement. Good leaders get all members of their teams engaged by offering them challenge, seeking their ideas and giving them recognition.

11. Humility. True leaders are confident but humble.

12. Empowering. True leaders make people feel encouraged and powerful, not weakened and powerless.

13. Fearlessness. Good leaders aren’t afraid to take risks or make mistakes.

14. Self-awareness. You should be clear on your strengths and what strengths you need from others.

15. Supportive. You need to foster a positive environment that allows your team to flourish.
